The Soup Nazi

Now this is the story all about how, my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute just sit right there... something that has to do with soup and rhymes with air...

Okay that didn’t make sense.

I have this friend. She’s going through something that is pretty rough, and since I’ve never gone through said trial before, the only thing I really could do for her was just be a listening ear and good friend. She would call often to vent about how miserable she felt. I got several text messages during the day from her, too. I felt so bad for her, mostly because I knew there wasn’t anything I could do to give her any relief. Her facebook page and blog started to see a lot of her ranting as well. I’m not judging, we all have that inner desire to scream at the top of our lungs that something is wrong and we need some comforting words from other people. Over the course of a few weeks, things stayed the same. I bought a half dozen of cupcakes from a famous little bakery in town after she begged for baked goods, and brought them over to her along with a couple books.
I know she appreciated it- but, to be honest, she showed her appreciation in a really weird and unorthodox way (like not at all).
Her texts were getting more and more consistent... and I found myself staying up late because the texting wasn’t coming to an end. She started asking for small favors, which was no big deal- I was more than happy to help out. The actual process of dialing my number and calling me (totally old school) started happening more, and during the day. I work full time, and I am not supposed to be on my phone. I check it here and there, and I’d listen to the three or four messages she’d leave, but I couldn’t really call her back. This went on for a little while longer, and then I started getting texts in the middle of the night. It was nothing but complaint after complaint. I was starting to lose my patience. I struggled to find words to reply after she had mentioned so many times how badly she “just wants to die”. After my patience had significantly worn off, the frustrations started to build. I hate to admit it, but I was really getting irritated. It was obvious that nothing I could offer to her was of any relief or help, and not one of the multitudes of advice from myself and others were of any value to her, she just wanted to complain. I was exhausted both mentally and physically from trying to pretend that her phrases of “wanting to die” didn’t sting, and staying up so late trying to comfort her.
I also hate to admit that I started screening my calls. I normally do, but I when I say screening my calls, I really mean that I started ignoring hers. I changed the settings on my iphone so that I could partially see her texts without having to open them to read them (iphone messaging will show the other person when the message is read, therefore she’d know if I were purposely not responding). It’s sad that went I through all this effort to ignore her. I would eventually get back to her, but it was on my own time frame. One night, i got a text around 8:30pm asking if I could make her some enchiladas. I love cooking, but not at 8:30pm and not when I feel like I’m at someone's beck and call. I was starting to feel abused. I wanted to help her because I knew what she was going through was rather tremendous and unknown to her, and probably pretty scary. I seeked some distance. I needed some time to myself, and some time away from my phone. During the evenings, I would turn my phone to silent and leave it in the bedroom- out of sight, out of mind. It was beautiful. Except for she started to notice. I told her I was just busy and had some other things I had to do. She seemed to understand; she’s good that way.

As nice as getting some space was, every single thing that she did kept bugging me. Every post on her blog, every email, every text... it all kept bothering me and irritating me even more. One day at work I read an email from her that really upset me, and I decided I couldn’t take it anymore. Something had to be done. Something somewhere, needed to change. I started with myself. I went to facebook and removed her from my news feed. It helped a lot, but every little thing she did was still like refueling a fire.

I sat down with Warren and asked him if he could help me find some solace. I don’t give him a lot of credit, but when he really wants to, he can be pretty admirable. He told me to keep trying to be her friend. And to maybe just put myself in her shoes. It kind of dawned on me a little. We’re not so different, her and I. I’m sure she was feeling very lonely. She’s not the first person to be going through this particular trial, but having people put her down because she was openly struggling with it, I’m sure was rather discouraging. Having people telling you that you aren’t dealing with your emotions the right way is so un-Christlike; He would never cast that type of judgement on anyone, but rather He would comfort them. I started to feel empathetic towards her. I knew exactly how she was feeling. After I was scorned for being sad that my mom died, I felt even worse. No one deserves to be judged that way, nor should they ever have to justify their feelings. So, I said a little prayer... and immediately the word “service” came into my head. As much as doing a service to this friend would be more like sacrificing a sheep (going a little old testament style) by this point, I knew it needed to be done. I answered my phone again and starting the whole process of listening to her complain over again.
A couple weeks earlier I tried this amazing recipe I found on Pinterest for Panera Broccoli Cheese Soup. It is divine. It definitely makes enough for four people, and rather than have leftovers- I thought I’d make it and share with them. This was back when I got home from work around 5:30-5:45pm. I had to quickly stop at the store to get the broccoli. So I didn’t start on the soup until close to 6pm. I told her that it would take a little while, and I estimated at least not until 7:30pm. I started working on it, and everything went smoothly. I was panicked though, because I didn’t want to let them down and make any mistakes, nor did I want it to take too long. Around 7:15 she calls asking when it was going to be done. I told her that it only had maybe 10-15 more minutes to simmer. She said okay... but you could hear the exasperation in her tone on the other end. Clearly they were hungry and didn’t want to wait any longer. I checked it once more, and the broccoli hadn’t cooked all the way through, so I turned up the heat and tried to get it to cook faster. All while getting texts from ‘friend’ wondering where dinner was.

She finally ended up telling me that if it was going to take much longer, she was just going to run out and get them something else. I was kind of appalled at her words. Here I was trying to do something nice for her, gave her plenty of warning that I couldn’t snap my fingers and have it ready, and she was being uber demanding. I turned off the heat, and said it was ready and that I’d put it in tupperware and bring it over, but got no response. I put some rolls in little baggies and packaged it all up, and called to make sure it was ok that I brought it over since she wasn’t responding. After waiting a few minutes, Warren decided that we were going to eat since it was getting close to 8pm. After we finished, Warren called the husband after my desperate attempts at calling ‘friend’. I should have just brought it over, but I didn’t want to carry hot soup all the way over and have them not be home because they decided to go grab something to eat. All those relatable feelings of inadequacy I had towards her were starting to smoulder away as my frustrations and irritations were flooding back to me. I thought for a second, that steam was really coming out of my ears. Neither one of them picked up the phone. For two people who have had their phones glued to them this whole time, I was beyond ticked that I was now being the ignored one. My stubborness decided to come through, and there was no way at this point, I was going to trouble myself by bringing it over anymore, so I put it all in the fridge and started the laundry. A whole hour went by, when finally ‘husband’ texted Warren (not me) a two word text: “don’t bother”.

I literally felt my heart flatline. Warren was even ticked off. He finally told me, “you don’t have to be friends with her anymore”. I started to cry, I’m ashamed to admit. Why was I even bothering to sacrifice my time and effort on a work night for two people who are so selfish and only use friendships to help better themselves? I had my first melt down in a long while. All the emotions I had been forcing away, how exhausted I was from trying so hard, all wrapped up inside the giant blanket of guilt I had from being sad that my mom was gone and not here to help me, all came crashing down at once. I fell to the floor and just bawled my eyes out. No more. They can go live their lives however they want, and slime all over whoever they wanted. But not me.

We ended up having a bit of a falling out... and I told her to that she wasn't the first pregnant person on the planet. I don't think this friendship was very uplifting. More like toxic.

Since then, we have apologized and talked things through. But she still continues to be a bit of a thorn in my side. I still have her blocked from facebook, and make every attempt to ignore her calls and texts, and return them later. If there were a word to remotely come close to how I act around her how, it would be chordial.
What did I learn from this? A lot, actually. First, that charity never faileth. The service part made me feel better and I knew it was the right thing to do. It also showed me to not offer anything to spoiled brats because it wont be good enough for them anyways. So that's my word of advice. Stay away from soup nazi's.

Food Facials

I saw this blog post a loooong time ago on Our Best Bites and I have been wanting to do it ever since. So last night, Hayley and I finally did it! It was pretty fun... a little messy, but it was a fun way to kill some time and play with our food.

First we started with a steam. We boiled some water, then once it started to simmer we added a sliced lemon and a bunch of mint leaves- and then stuck our faces in the steam. Steaming is good because it opens your pores. I kind of thought it was just a rumor. But if Our Best Bites says it's true then it must be. :)
Next we did an exfoliating mask made of oatmeal. Oatmeal is nourishing and exfoliates dead skin cells. After the weird mid-menstrual cycle break out I had a couple weeks, heaven knows I need to get rid of some dead skin! Here's what you need:

4 T oats
1 t baking soda
Enough warm water to make a paste. Start with a tablespoon. Slop it on your face and scrub for a couple minutes, then wash off. Ours did not turn into a paste, but stayed chunky. Still worked, but it kept dripping off our faces and on to the floor... Mrs. Doubtfire anyone?

Third we did an antioxidant mask. Not going to lie, I have no idea what antioxidants do, but I know they are good for you and fight diseases when ingested.
This mask is made of strawberries, corn starch and a splash of lemon juice. The strawberries have the antioxidants and vitamins, especially vitamin C which is especially good for your skin and immune system. Lemon juice is good for oily skin, and the corn starch dries it to tighten against your skin. Here's what you'll need:

5-6 chopped strawberries
3 T corn starch
a splash (1 T) lemon juice
In a Magic Bullet or food processor add all the ingredients until mostly smooth. Rub on your face! Let it sit until it's dry and tightened and wash off with a warm wash cloth.

Fourth we did a yogurt, honey and cucumber mask. Plain yogurt has lactic acid which minimizes pores. Honey tightens skin and helps fight acne and wrinkles, and cucumber is soothing. I think this one was my favorite. It felt so good on my face, I didn't want to take it off.

Here's what you'll need:
4 T plain yogurt
1 T honey (the liquid kind)
1 T cucumber pulp (cut 1 inch and used the small side of a cheese grater)
Mix all ingredients together, and smooth on to your face. Let it sit for a few minutes and wash off with warm wash cloth. You can also put sliced cucumbers on your eyes... but as we found out, they don't really stay well unless you are laying down on your back... It also smeared all our mascara. So much for trying to look pretty!

Last we did an avocado mask. I tried to suppress my disdain for avocados for the time being, long enough to smoother it on my face.

Avocado is one of the most popular power food fads right now, but I will not eat it. No sir. I get that it's good for you, but at what cost? I will not eat anything that has similar consistency to baby poop and tastes like grass. But to my surprise, I actually loved it... well, for a beauty regimen. Avocados have vitamin K and healthy oils that sooth and moisturize and leave your skin soft. You definitely want to save this one for last. Here's what you'll need:
1 avocado, mashed with a fork
a splash of lemon juice
We added 1 T of honey, because we are young and still have break outs
Mix it all together and smooth on your face. Let sit for 3-5 minutes and rinse off with wash cloth.

My skin is super soft, clean and moisturized. I thought I'd either have an allergic reaction or my skin would be really tight and dry, but surprisingly it's almost perfect feeling! I definitely recommend these to anyone, especially for a girls night. It's fun and a healthy alternative to chemicals. And easy enough for little girls, too. Ya know, in case they need to work on those wrinkles... ;)

July? Where are you?

Raise your hand if you can't believe today is August 10th. Bee-tee-dubs... Today is my baptism birthday! Happy 11 years to me!

July was so busy- I don't know what happened. I like it though. That means it was productive. Last night I was sitting in bed reading (geez... I sound like I'm old) and I felt a breeze blow in from the window, and it was chilly. Ugh... I could feel it. Fall. It's coming. And I am none too pleased.

Anyways, there were a lot of goings on in July. First there was Canada Day, in which I sat at home and did nothing.  Then there was The Calgary Stampede. It's a big deal here in Canada. So big, in fact that Garth Brooks who is not touring or doing any music related anything, did a show just for the stampede. I hear it was epic.
There are tons of small events that happen, and my office had two of their own. First, there was Bullbustin'. Which is where you watch those very gorgeous cowboys ride the bulls. We were front and center... you could feel the steam from the bulls' breath. I took about a billion pictures, and got some really awesome shots. Unfortunately the next day, I hit "format SD card" and lost absolutely everything. #epicfail. So I snagged some pictures from Sandra.
Half of our group:

The super angry bull:

This photo Sandra actually won Sandra a photo contest:

I did not know I was getting my picture taken... ya like the pig tails? This is about as western as I get.

It was super fun, but I'm still bummed I lost all of my pictures. What luck. I'm such an idiot! Then we had a stampede BBQ which was delicious. I'm not really one for sauteed onions, but my goodness... my boss insisted I put them on my burger and it was love at first... taste.

Sandra and I didn't really mean to dress alike, it just sort of happened. And yes, it's the same shirt from before. I only have one western shirt. :)

In the blue is my manager Dom (short for Dominic because he's Italian) and next to him in brown is Alex our maintenance guy from Russia. He's my favorite Russian.

And this is me and Sandra, with Christian one of my favorite Realtors making a creepy face distracting me from the camera.

So that was Stampede.

In other news, we finished painting our living room. Baseboards and all. It's a similar color, just a shade or two darker. I love love love love it. I also have finished painting my Tiffany's bathroom, but still need to do the baseboards. I don't really have pictures yet because the rooms are kind of desolate still.
There was a massive hail storm that pretty destroyed everything. We have some hail damage to our roof, but since we're getting a new one anyways, we didn't really care. My flowers however- toast.
My zucchini exploded. I took a picture with my foot so you can see just how big it is. There are about 7 or 8 little zucchini's between the two plants.
And then I made a wreath.

It was easy. In case you wanted to know, I bought a twiggy wreath from Michael's, then hot glued flowers to one side, painted a letter F with some left over paint I had, and glued it on the other side. It took me all of 10 minutes, minus the drying time for the paint. I have also started a couple other projects but they aren't done yet. Welcome to August!

In which I read a book

Shocking, I know.

Go ahead, I'll wait while you pick your jaw up off the floor.

So yes. I read a book. Two in fact, and now I'm on my third. Early July I got bit by the reading bug. Which is impeccably bad timing seeing as I have a lot of painting I want done. I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on the book, only because it's one of the most controversial books surfacing the planet right now. Fifty Shades of Grey.

Now, before you jump on your soap box and start telling me how I'm going to hell and what a bad person I am- think of that scripture some where that says "judge ye not, lest ye be judged"... or something. Clearly I am not going to give you a play-by-play of the "dirty" stuff. Obviously.

First, you have to know that I am a sucker for a good love story. My cousin-in-law sent me a .pdf of the first book of this series. I figured, what the heck! A free .pdf version wont harm anything, if I don't end up liking it then I wont feel guilty for purchasing it. Because it was free, duh.

Side note. Somehow I got the notion that Zac Efron was Christian Grey. I think it had something to do with when The Lucky One came out and there was a lot of controversy about that one, too. Somehow, it wormed its way into my brain. I've tried to replace his image with other famous celebrities, but it just keeps going back to him. He fits the description of Christian dead on, so I guess it's not that crazy. However, Chace Crawford fits it pretty well, too. #whatahunk

I have to say, I thoroughly loved this book. Disregarding the sex (which to be honest, wasn't anything worse than most movies and TV shows nowadays, and pretty mild compared to what everyone was saying) this love story is one of the best I've ever read, or watched unfold on TV or in a movie. Maybe it's because Ana is so relatable to myself, and Christian has some deep, dark, and depressing skeletons in his closet that makes it really intriguing. Think Rory Gilmore and Jess Mariano with the wealth and looks and charm of Logan Huntzberger. (Oh, I'm sorry, have I not told you how much I love Gilmore Girls?). The twists just keep getting better, so not to just keep reading about mushy stuff which, admittedly, can get old and boring. There's enough mystery to keep the suspense up, and you really start to understand some of the pains other people might be going through. It gives you a lot of perspective about life, and retrospect about things in the past. It really is deeper than just a love story between two people.

The other thing that I really loved was the style of writing the author uses. It's what pretty much sealed the deal for me. Her style is so similar to mine, and the way I think and speak. So it almost felt like an extension of myself as far as writing goes. It really has encouraged me to not look back and second guess my choices in writing my own novel. She references a lot of different books and movies and characters, much like Gilmore Girls does, to add wit and intelligence. Ah! It's so thrilling to see that type of thinking in someone other than myself! Like a breathe of fresh air almost! I feel like I could quote all my favorite things and she'd get it, all of it. No more making reference to Jim Halpert and having people look at me like I have 15 heads and don't know what I'm talking about. Okay, I'm going off on a tangent here, but you get the idea.

I'd recommend this to anyone who isn't too prideful to give the ol' college try. Like I said, it's much deeper than two people falling in love. The sex is not nearly as bad people are making it sound. And there are definitely parts where you will be giggling like a child for no apparent reason. :)

And those are my thoughts!
