I hate PMS!

The last few days have been rough for me. Which bugs me because it's Christmas time and everyone should be happy and loving- and I think I know why. Premenstrual syndrome, commonly associate with Aunt Flow. Up until I was 18 I never had any symptoms when Aunt Flow was in town and then it slowly began. The life long realization that being a girl sucks. Four years later here I am still complaining about it. I guess I should be grateful that Aunt Flow is coming, otherwise I'd have bigger problems to worry about.
Last night, we were invited over to a family's house to make gingerbread houses. Much to our horrid surprise the *Smith's were also there. I decided to call my YW's partner, the one I love so, so much, Jane Smith to make things easier. So Jane and her husband were there. Warren isn't exactly the biggest fan of them either, but only from the things he's heard from me- but really, he doesn't know them very well. This family that invited us over has two kids a girl and a boy, who are YW/YM age. Jane starts in by telling the 12 year old boy that "so-in-so" from the YM's said there is no activity tomorrow (tonight). What's funny is that she said nothing to me about it, and I had even talked to "so-in-so"'s wife earlier in the day and heard a completely different story about the activity that had been planned for tonight. I had also talked to so-in-so's wife about how frustrated I was that I was always out of the loop and that no one ever included me. They shouldn't have asked the bishop to call an extra person if they weren't going to include said person. Jane cocked her head to the side in response--- and holy crap, I have never witnessed a bigger, snottier attitude in my entire life with the response... "um, no there isn't." Hey, California called, they want their valley girl back.
The rest of the night was similar only with less interaction between Jane and I. Warren could tell I was fuming.
When we got home, Warren told me how sorry he was that I had to put up with her. He never believed what I was saying to him all this time was true- he thought I was over exaggerating- but I wasn't, I was just giving him the Reader's Digest versions. He suggested that next time we are invited over to someone's house, we need to nonchalantly ask if anyone else is invited (ie the Smith's- but we wouldn't say their names, obviously) and if they are going to be there, we will have to kindly decline the offer. It's pretty sad when you have to decide that declining offers is the best solution. Sure, we could just suck it up, but Warren suggested it would be better to just not be involved then take the risk of not being able to control your frustrations if it happens again.
Tonight was the worst though. Graham came over with Hayley and we all decided to go out to eat. We decided to try this new burger place "Five Guys, Burgers and Fries" or whatever. So we parked and I was behind the driver seat. I opened my door and you know how sometimes car doors, once you open them a certain amount they kind of just swing open on their own? I guess it has something to do with the hinges. Anyways, that happened to me and it caught me off guard and my left foot was already out of the car and I didn't catch the door before it hit the car next to us. I felt horrible, but I knew it didn't hit it very hard, just enough to make a mark in the dirt. It wasn't like I swung the door with all my strength. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal, except for the small fact that the driver was in the car and heard it. She started yelling towards me before I even walked close enough to the window for her to see who did it- did I mention it was a huge truck? Well, it was. I told her I was sorry but she didn't roll down her window and I wasn't about to sit there in the cold and yell at her through the window. I told her I was sorry, again... yelling, because remember she wouldn't roll down the window- instead she just sat there flailing her arms around, shouting profanities and giving me the bird. I felt horrible but I wasn't going to tolerate that kind of behavior so I walked away. Maybe the wrong thing to do, but I didn't care. As I turned away from her, I told Warren what I did once I caught up to him (no one knew why I was yelling at this lady so they kept walking) but before he said anything the lady started honking her horn a thousand times. That was the most awkward 30 feet in my life. When we got in I did my best to not start crying. I was scared she was going to get out of the car and come find me. Luckily she didn't, and she didn't leave a nasty note on the car either. I'm still really upset about it.
Remember how I'm PMSing right now, too? That doesn't help when things like this happen. I just wanted to go home and cry and be alone and do my own thing (which was the plan before Warren decided to invite Graham over). I'm hoping that once Aunt Flow finally gets here things will calm down- it usually does. But for now, I'm sitting alone in the bedroom while everyone is out watching a movie. I just don't want to be around anyone. On the ride home, Warren asked me if I took my vitamins today, in which I replied that I had, and he followed with "maybe you should take more since you're so mean". THANKS. Maybe next time let's not announce that to the whole car, shall we? Ugh. I can't wait for this to be over.

Because It's Christmas

Christmas reminds me home. And home reminds me of my mom. I got onto a weird tangent in my head earlier, and I just thought I'd write a post completely dedicated to my awesome mom.
Everyone's mom is awesome, but I truly think my mom has a special designated spot in heaven, right next to Christ himself.
My mom is the youngest of four- two sisters and one brother. She tells me horror stories of the things they did to tease her. Especially, my uncle! She was born in Pocatello, and later moved with her family to Idaho Falls. One of my mom's fondest memories of her childhood is being sealed as a family in the Idaho Falls Temple. My mom worked as a nurse's assistant when she was younger. She never had the opportunity to go to college, but always worked hard and never let her three daughters go without- That's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom didn't stay active in the gospel, but always taught us to pray to Heavenly Father. She told us all about Him and how He was watching us and looking out for us. She always encouraged us to be Christ like, even with her uncertainty, she never wanted us to not know Him- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom worked several jobs in order to provide for her family. On top of working full time and raising my older sister and I by herself, my mom attended AA meetings in the evenings- she will be celebrating her 18th year of being sober in March- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
My mom married her 3rd husband when I was 6, and the next year introduced me to the newest member of the family, my little sister. Everyone swooned over the new baby, I was pushed into the background. Everyone ignored me, and no one ever let me play with my new sister. Except my mom. Mom never forgot about me. She always played with me when everyone's attention was on my sister, and mom helped me teach my baby sister how to walk and talk, change diapers and even let me feed her bottles (and open the refrigerator door, which she later regretted)- that's my my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom put up with a lot. Her third husband hasn't been the nicest guy. He hit my mom often, and took advantage of her kind heart. He lied and cheated, and never was nice to anyone. Mom took it with a grain of salt, and always forgave him with a heart full of hope and faith that one day it would stop- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom's face was in every audience at every basketball game, soccer game, softball game, dance recital, school program, choir concert, awards ceremony and graduation. She never missed a single event, no matter how little time or energy she had- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom worked 60 hours a week to pay all the bills. She put everything she had into the bank account and kept nothing for herself. She always made sure that we never went without. We always had gifts for our birthdays and Christmas's- yet never asked for anything to call her own and wore shoes with holes. She only wanted to make others happy and feel loved. That's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
My mom would go to work wearing sunglasses to hide the bruises. She was always so positive and pleasant and never let anyone know what was happening at home. She never complained and never cried in public, she never let it bother her and always kept saying "don't punish him, for he knows not what he's done"- that's why mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom cooked every meal, did all the laundry and cleaned every surface, picked up after all her kids and her husband, never asking for help but was always overly thankful when someone offered to vacuum. She even made time to take care of her own mother- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom covered for us when we did something wrong, so my step-dad wouldn't find out. She took the blame for broken glasses and spilled nacho cheese on the carpet. She also never told my step-dad about the small driving ticket I got on my 16th birthday, and forwarded the money to pay the fee. She made sure everyone's plate was full before she sat down to her own plate. She always did the dishes, too- that's why mom will sit next to Christ.
Mom took care of everyone when they were sick. She never complained about catching our illnesses and never asked for anyone to help her when she was sick. She is always there to talk, and to comfort when someone is sad. Mom never forgets to say I love you- that's why my mom will sit next to Christ.
My mom gave everything she had to take care of others. She loves everyone and was so positive. In September of this year she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The day following her diagnosis she started chemotherapy. A few weeks later she started radiation. After 37 years of smoking, she was finally able to kick the habit and has finished all her chemo and radiation treatments. She lost all her hair but never lost that smile! After all these years of taking care of others, it was our turn to take care of her. She finally decided to divorce her horrible husband of 18 years. I've never seen her happier. She is truly the strongest person I know, and has overcome so many obstacles and never regretted anything- that's why mom will sit next to Christ

  Love you mom!

More to the story...

So for those of you who care... :)
Remember my last post how I was ranting and throwing a fit? Well there's more to that story.
So about an hour after I vented all over my blog, I started panicking because according to my calculations, there was absolutely no way I would be able to deliver anything of high demand for our activity that night with the given amount of time I had. I called my YW's partner back and asked specifically if there was something I needed to bring. For example, if she was bringing a main course did she want me to bring a salad... that sort of thing- because, raise your hand if you've gone to a party and the only food there were Doritos and salsa? I told her how upset I was that I got the call the day of and how frustrated I am that I am always the last to know and the last to be included, if at all. I felt a little bad because I know the last thing she needed was to hear me complain and be upset with her, after all she is only the messenger. I explained to her that there was no way I could bring anything special with such short notice and with all the other things I had going on. She told me not to worry about it and to just bring whatever I had (um, hello I just told you, I have NOTHING because my grocery shopping day is set for Thursday {today}).
We talked a little bit and discussed how frustrated we both were because there is zero communication between anyone and with the president out of commission (found out her cancer spread), it makes it 10 times harder to get things accomplished. She also informed that I wasn't just feeding the YW but the YM, too! Oh my gosh, seriousLY?! Oh, and don't forget the White Elephant gift exchange! *insert sarcastic smile here*
I decided to make some Gingersnaps that I had been craving, but such as in life- I am a failure. My cookies were not dark brown and crackly like they should have been... they were light in color and stayed in the form of globs. Never mind that I started crying over retarded cookies- I had no time left to make anything else! So I brought what I had and I told her that I did my best and that I was a total loser and couldn't wait for the night to be over. She gave me a hug, which was nice because she's generally pretty cold towards me most of the time. I also gave her a little gift bag with some caramels that I made last week since she was having a rough day, too. We played some games, but I sat alone by myself, like a huge loser. That's right, she didn't even sit next to me the whole night.
I came home and because I was so upset, and Warren was glued to the playstation (boy I can't wait for him to out grow that thing) I decided to try again with the cookies. Warren told me he will only eat things that come from his mom or are her recipes. Wow what an ego booster, pal. We were not on good terms after that. So in spite of him, I called my MIL to get her recipe- lo and behold it's pretty much the same, give or take a little flour here and there. She helped me the best she could, but my cookies still were not Gingersnapy. I finally fell on the floor, smacked my head against the wall and started bawling like a 4 year old. Warren came in and asked what was wrong-- after much deliberation, he concluded that something must be wrong with our oven because nothing ever comes out right anymore. Which would explain why my foodie blog has been a little empty lately, in case you didn't notice. So great! My oven doesn't work. Since baking is more of a science than anything else, the temperature has to be precise or else your yummy treats turn out not so yummy.
So that was my day.
In other news, I am in desperate search of a photographer! I have so many friends who take excellent pictures but none of them live near by. So, if you know of anyone....... :) Hope everyone else is having a fab day! I just got some new headbands and accessories from my good friend Lindsey at Petals and Posh and I'm so excited to post pictures of them--- once I get pictures taken! Thanks for reading, sorry if it's boring.

I'll probably regret this

Today, I am needing to vent.
I got a call today from someone who I've mentioned on this blog already. Ya know... my YW's partner... and she informed me that tonight we are having a pot luck dinner. A FREAKING POT LUCK DINNER. And she calls me the day of? Asking me to bring something. I'm assuming 'bring something' means bring something big enough to feed a lot of people because the phrase she followed up with included the words 'none of the other leaders are coming'. Could she maybe have called me Sunday? Yesterday would have even sufficed since I went to BOTH Wal-Marts and would have gladly picked somethings up to bring tonight. But no. She calls me the day of. Can I also state for the record, that this is NOT the first time she has done this? She changes her plans the day of and then doesn't call me- so I show up, like an idiot, prepared for a completely different activity. I want an official list of the activities for the next two months, ya know, something equivalent to the golden plates- written in stone... maybe vampire it up a bit and write it down in blood.
It doesn't help that the only thing I have that I can make in less than an hour is a box of brownie mix- but alas, I have to go all the way to my bishops house to get my baking dish that fits the brownies. Also, I have to make lasagna tonight. Why? Everything I have to make it needs to be used up by tonight or else it's all trashed. My dishes have been backed up since last Thursday and have now spread from the sink to both neighboring counters... so, gotta get that done today. It was already on my list of things to do, but I thought I'd have more time tonight which is why I scheduled it later on. Yes, I schedule out my days. You think I'm bored a lot, but trust me there are lots of things to get done some days. Warren doesn't get home until 4, so I don't have a car until then- that gives me 3 hours to go to the store, 20 minute traveling time each way, then to prepare and bake whatever it is I decide to bring. Not to mention make dinner for myself and husband and then eat it.
Am I being over dramatic? Probably. But I am so frustrated. Now, I'm not 'living in the thin of things' because I am more than willing to bring something and I'll do it just as willingly and I'll make time to get it done, but would it have killed her to call me earlier? Probably because she can't handle her life now that she's got a 6 month old baby. Life must be so hard!!!! (I don't mean any disrespect to those who have kids and have a hard time finding time to get things done... but she milks it a little too much.)

One for the books

For a few weeks now, Warren and I have wanted to try sushi. In case you didn't know it, Calgary is home to many ethnic groups. Canada as a whole, really... so you see a lot more foods from different cultures. Warren loves Chinese, and I am quite fond of Japanese- but neither one of us had ever had sushi, mostly because of it's reputation. Just so you know, I haven't had fish, in... maybe 15 years? I think I had a tuna sandwich once when I was a teenager because there was nothing else to eat and I was home alone... but that was it. I remember going fishing a lot with my dad- and this one time he caught a salmon and put it in his smoker. I remember liking that a lot.. granted it was fully cooked and full of smokey flavor to cover up the fishy taste, and I was 6 years old. Blech. I'm just not a fan of it. It's not so much the actual taste that I don't like, it's the smell. My parents were big into crab when I was young... ugh, I remember having to spend the night at friends' houses when they cooked crab.
Not only that, but at the grocery stores... why do they have tanks of live fish swimming around, and fish with their eyes and skin still attached, just laying around waiting for a home to go home to? It's not like you see a dead cow up there, hanging with everything still attached- so can you blame me for not wanting to eat something so life-like?
But, I sucked it up. I really wanted to try sushi. I had seaweed once before, and I remember not hating it. I mean, it wasn't very appetizing but it wasn't horrible- and I figured I would like sushi, at least enough to eat it once. When we got there, and looked at the menu... I chickened out and knew I couldn't do it. I'm sure it's all mental, but my brain knows me well. We ordered fish-less things such as cucumber rolls, avocado rolls and veggie rolls. When it came... I got nervous. Have you tried using chop sticks before? That is a skill that you are born with my friends. Warren went first, and I could tell by his hesitation that this was going to be disastrous. He tried to fake it though, and tell me it wasn't bad. He said by the end however, he didn't notice the salty seaweed taste. I went next, and I picked it up... smelled it... and put it down on the plate. Everyone started making fun of me (like usual) because they knew I wouldn't like it. I tried again, and I bit into it... taking as small of a bite as possible... unforunately I got nothing but a chunk of seaweed and chased it down with a ton of water and a piece of ginger.
Long story short, it didn't go well. I tried really hard because I wanted to like it. I like the idea of it- I think I'd love it if it had fried chicken in it... or dessert sushi, like from Gilmore Girls. And maybe nix the seaweed. That was the nasty part. The rest I didn't mind, especially with all the sauces they had. I tore off the seaweed and ate the insides, but I couldn't get the taste out- and I ended up just eating the chocolate pretzel sticks they gave us. Everyone of course, made fun of me. I actually started crying later after we got home because Graham kept making comments like "gee Kels, you're making it really easy for people to spot the American in here"... and laughing at me. It hurt a lot, but I guess it's an experience, right? Anyways, we took pictures to remember it by- so here ya go. Some are blurry, so just look past it.
In his face, you really can see his uncertainty

Looks can be deceiving- my mouth is full and I'm smiling... but I'm gagging on the inside- And Graham anxiously awaiting my reaction... punk.
As you can see here, I'm having issues with my chop sticks
Not gonna lie, it looks so pretty. And yes, that's Mayo drizzled on top...
I gave up on using both sticks.. and stabbed it instead... this is also as far as I got with this piece
And this is what happened afterward when I tried to just eat the insides
And in case you weren't grossed out enough already... I had throw this picture in just for kicks.
Did I have fun? Yes. Did I try something new? Yes. Was it successful? Not entirely. I might try it again one day, and like I said, I like the idea of it. Maybe I should try to create my own kind of sushi.

Tagged?

I think Heather tagged me in her post, so I guess I must re-post it!

1. What is your ALL time favorite song and why? That's hard to answer because I like so many genres. I currently am in love with "My Kind Of Perfect" by David Archuleta.

2. What was the most memorable part of your wedding day and or first date if you are not married yet? The stress of it all is what I remember most. I remember other things, but I remember having more anxiety attacks than I ever imagined possible on that day.

3. What do you want to be when you grow up? I'm very ambitious, but with a heavy side of 'second guessing myself' so I get scared. I used to want to be an orthodontist, but I've now think maybe cosmetology or a caterer or some sort is where my ambitions lie now.

4. Why do you blog? I like to share my life with friends- and it brings me a lot of joy seeing others interested in what I'm up to. It's a good way to stay connected with others.

5. What is your favorite attribute about yourself and why? I'm not very naive, and I tell it how it is. I think it makes me a very down to earth person and a person that others can easily relate to.

6. What's on your Christmas list this year? I have many things that I'd like to receive, but I think knowing my family is happy and healthy is what I'd like to hear/have most. It seems very cliche, but it brings a lot more joy than shoes do... but I do love shoes!

7. What is your "signature drink"? Maybe grape juice? I looooove grape juice!

I tag: Lindsey Lyman, Shelayna, and Rebecca Mann

Some people

...Complain too much. As I'm scanning my news feed, I can't help but put two and two together that it's snowing and blizzarding down south. Could someone else please complain about the weather, because that's not an original or interesting thought in the least. Now, I know that I definitely have no room talk, but at least I can admit it. In fact, I'm complaining right now about how much I hate complainers. I get that when it dumps a lot of snow, it's at best a good conversation starter, but must the entire world get thrown off? It's winter people, you live in the Rocky Mountains... it's snows there. Get over it. Maybe you should change your attitude and think "oh yay it's snowing, how grateful I am to live in a place that enjoys all 4 seasons of the year" or better yet, be grateful for the Person who created that snow storm's ability to produce snow. Now if you are more of a theorist rather than a creationist, then think how awesome it is that the Earth can do such marvelous things. And also, be thankful that you have snow plows to plow your roads- a luxury that not all people enjoy. Maybe be thankful that it's not -22 degrees Fahrenheit outside right now where you live... and that's NOT calculating the wind chill. We have frost on the inside of our windows...

And last but certainly not least... Be grateful that you don't have to plug your car in when it's not running...

Okay, now that I'm done venting, look at how cute these cats are. I'm not a cat person, but I'm thinking of adopting a little baby kitten.

They don't like getting their pictures taken... but don't you wish you had a fluffy cuddle bunny like these? Oh, and I guess I should add, sorry if I offended anyone with my ranting. ;) And does anyone have any tips for a first time kitty owner?

Ice Ice Baby!

Yay snow! Every year, I whine and complain about the change in seasons. I really hate the cold because I most definitely prefer the warmth of summer. This is the first snow fall of the season, and it actually made me feel happy inside, which surprised me. It's so pretty, and bonus- the snow makes the road quiet so in the wee hours of the mornings so the cars don't wake me up! It's awesome! What's not awesome though, is really how cold it is. Maybe it's just me, and the fact that I didn't grow up using the metric system but -14C seems extremely colder than 7F. The windchill makes it feel like -21C. BAH! It's okay, because this year, unlike last winter, I now have a big giant window to look out, and my own heaters and access to said heaters. Stupid basement apartment.

In other news, today is the last day of my mom's chemo and radiation treatments. It went quickly it seems, but it was rough. The radiation definitely took a tole on her, and I felt so bad because there was nothing I could do. She gets a rest for a about 10 days and then they will re-test. Cross your fingers that all the cancer is gone!

Last night we had our Young Women's in Excellence- the girls did so well, I was seriously impressed! I only got a couple pictures...

In the first picture, a group of girls did the "Thriller" dance... so that's why they look like zombies. And in the second picture, is Sarah who saved up all her money to buy that guitar two weeks ago, and has since learned to play a song! I can't even hold a guitar correctly, so props to her! And, because I'm still in awe over this picture, I'm posting it again. You can click the link here to view the recipes and to see my foodie blog!
Is it wrong to be so proud of myself? Oh, I have to mention also that I made that cupcake stand! Thanks Annie's Eats!
So I have to tell you a story. The story of yesterday. Yesterday, I was in charge of making those delicious baked goods, and I was so excited. It seems like it was a Herculean task, but really it wasn't. I paced myself, and did a lot of prep work so that I wouldn't be rushed. Truly, everything would have gone smoothly had I not messed up. Delaine was coming to pick me up around 6:30, to help me transport it all to the church. I started to panic about 6:05 when my 2nd batch of chocolate frosting wouldn't come together. It stayed the consistency of cake batter. I started crying hysterically and hyperventilating... Warren freaked. I look back and laugh, because really I had no need to panic. Delaine wouldn't be mad, and the treats weren't going to be served until the end, so I had lots of time. I started the frosting over, but made a small mistake, which I realized before I added any of the ingredients. I had doubled everything, except the butter, which is why it didn't thicken! I felt like an idiot, but we came up with a plan. We would take everything to the church, and finish making it in the kitchen. But, on our way to the church we've had to stop at Sobey's to get more butter. So we packed up Delaine's car with my mixer, two open pots of chocolate, a box of unfrosted cupcakes, along with all the utensils to make everything. As we were driving to the church, with the butter, some DUMB HEAD next to us (remember the roads are covered in ice and layers of snow) is merging into our lane right next to us with no blinker, and acting as if he's not really meaning to come in our lane, he just can't pick a lane to stay in... we pass him, and discover he's talking on his cell phone. Really? On these roads, you dare to pick up your phone? I seriously wanted to jump out of the car and pound on his window.
Anyways, that's all. Happy hump day!

To the temple

On Friday night, I got to go here for a youth temple trip.

Is this not the coolest lookin' temple you've ever seen? I thought it was pretty unique. This baby is a maze inside. Not to mention, super old. This is where Warren's grandpa Fairbanks was baptized because they didn't have founts anywhere else. Neato mosquito! I wish I could show you the inside, but... oh well. Let's just say, it was very old and nothing similar to the Boise Temple, or any other temple that I've been in. It was interesting having to travel 2 1/2 hours to go to the temple. I've always lived in a city where the temple was just down the street. I went ahead and looked up interesting facts about this temple, since it's so historic and is a special part of Warren's family history.

Original announcement was made June 27, 1913 by Joseph F. Smith.

Dedicated in August 1923 by Heber J. Grant. (that was the year my grandma was born.)

The Cardston Alberta Temple is a historic Alberta landmark that stands on elevated ground in the center of Cardston. Founded by Mormon settlers in 1887, the small community lies just 15 miles north of the U.S.-Canada border on southern Alberta's fertile plains. Outside the gates of the temple, a public visitors center (operated in the summer) offers several displays including construction photographs dating to the early 1900s.

Temple Facts:
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple was the first temple built in Canada.
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple was the first temple built outside of the United States.
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple was the first temple whose design was put out to bid to prominent architects. Until that time, all temples had been designed under the direct supervision of Joseph Smith or Brigham Young.
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple was was the first temple designed without a priesthood assembly room, demonstrating a transition away from the multi-purpose use of temples.
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple was originally named the Alberta Temple.
  • The design of the Cardston Alberta Temple served as the basic pattern for the Laie Hawaii Temple, which was completed four years before the Cardston temple was dedicated.
  • Delayed in part by World War I, construction of the Cardston Alberta Temple lasted for 10 years. The last two years of construction were needed just to furnish the temple and prepare it for use; public tours were offered to visitors during this time.
  • The Cardston Alberta Temple features beautiful hand-painted murals and rare hardwoods on the walls of its its progressive-style ordinance rooms: Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, Terrestrial Room, and Celestial Room (no murals).
  • In 1962, an addition to the Cardston Alberta Temple was dedicated by President Hugh B. Brown, who resided in Alberta for many years after his family moved there when he was sixteen years old.
  • In May 1988, the Cardston Alberta Temple was closed for three years of renovation work, which included modernization of its electrical and mechanical systems, addition of an entryway to the front of the building, and complete refurbishment of its interior—done with painstaking attention to detail to keep the temple true to its original decorating and design.
  • On September 16, 1995, the government named the Cardston Alberta Temple a Canadian Historic Site. The commemorative plaque recognizes the temple as "the first consciously modern building in the province of Alberta."
Kind of interesting, I thought. It's neat to go to places that have such historic importance. Everyone should come to Canada to check it out! ;)

Fake it until you make it

I'm having an enormous problem today. Ya know how there are just some people you can't get along with? Or rather, people you just can't seem to please? I'm totally going through this. As you now, I was called into the YW's program this summer. I've been in there for a few months, and even to this day, I'm not really feelin' the love. I don't think I should come home Tuesday nights with red, wet eyes because I barely made it to the car before bursting into tears. I can't figure out why I'm not liked by the other leaders. I know I'm young, but is that a reason to treat me differently? My problem is mainly with a particular leader, unfortunately she is the one I work with in the Mia Maids.

As I was writing down all the things she's done to me and how each of those actions made me feel (I wasn't going to post it, I was just brainstorming as per Warren, who thought if I wrote my problems down I might be able to reevaluate the situation and come up with a solution on my own- well it worked) I realized that maybe I should change my attitude. And, to be fair, I'm not the one with the attitude problem, clearly- it is this fellow leader of mine. So, thankfully this leader isn't on Facebook or blogger... or anything like that, so I feel like I can say things on here. And if she reads it... who cares.

Dear (insert name here),
I feel like I've done something to offend you, or for some reason you don't like me. I've been trying really hard to talk to you and make it less uncomfortable for myself, but it seems as though you'd rather I not be around. I've been offering many services to you to help you out in all your planning and projects, but you've rejected everything. I've tried talking to you about things, and you've interrupted me and started new conversations with the person on your left. I've complemented you and I've backed you up when you were feeling really upset. I've done everything I know to do in order to get a positive and nicer reaction out of you. I come home every Tuesday night, barely making it to the car before bursting into tears. We recently attended a games night with you and another couple, and to say it was extremely uncomfortable is an understatement. You didn't speak one word to me the entire night. The only interaction we had is when you would stare at me, and I would look up and notice your eyes piercing into me. I don't get you. I don't understand why you are so cold towards me, and what I did to offend you, but I'd really like you to stop acting like a brat. I shouldn't be feeling this way- we are adults now, this game of intimidation is childish and I wont tolerate it anymore. I'm no longer going to go out of my way to talk to you, or offer to help you with anything. I simply am going to go about my business in becoming friends with the girls, and you can sit there alone and wish you had someone there to listen to you talk about yourself. Oh, and no matter how awful you treat me, no matter how unwanted and unimportant you make me feel, I'm going to fake it until I make it. Even if that means that every Tuesday night at 8:35pm, I get in my car and cry the whole way home, and even if Sunday's are the most painful days to roll out of bed to go to church and see your sweet smiling face (note the sarcasm) I'm going to do it, and I'm going to suck it up and I'm going to be nice and pleasant to everyone else, and you can just... do whatever it is you do. Your condescending demeanor can hurt me all it wants, but it wont stop me. I hope you have a horrible day.
Many handshakes,
Kelsey

Does anyone know how to deal with people like this? Any advice as to what I should do?

"I'm gonna be the new whaaaatt?"

Yesterday at church, was weird. I got a third, yes a third, calling.

It was loud in the chapel when Bro Sherwood comes up to me... the only three words I heard were Stake Girls Camp Director. Um, what? I went throughout the whole day thinking about how I was going to find a way to get out of this... I got home and Warren assured me that if I were to be given a stake leadership position, a member of the stake presidency would ask. So, actually, I don't know what my third calling is... all I know is that it has something to do with girls camp. Do you hear me talking about girls camp? No. That's because I hated it. I have no good memories from it. Plus, there is a whole slew of foreign animals in these parts of the woods.

Anyways. The plans are set for our Ugly Sweater Soiree... I'm getting excited for it! I'm thinking of making a jalapeno popper dip served with baguettes or veggies. For YW In Excellence next week, I'm making chocolate cupcakes, with this new frosting I found, and I'm thinking of shaving some chocolate over the tops. I'm also going to do raspberry cheesecake cupcakes. Just thinking about it makes me hungry! Does anyone know where to get really ugly sweaters? I need some good input- we've got to have epic ugly sweaters. I'm determined. ;)

To fit in, or to not fit in?

I don't know how I feel about LuLuLemon. I know most of you in the States have probably never heard of LuLuLemon before... let me show you what it is.

Athletic clothes. Not just athletic clothes, but freakin' expensive athletic clothes that everyone and their mom wears- not just when working out, some people make it their outfit for the day. It pretty much drives me insane. I personally, feel a little uncomfortable when I'm standing behind someone in line at the grocery store, who is wearing the most revealing work out pants in the world. It makes me want to lean over to said person, and quote my favorite TV show, and recall "it must be jelly, 'cuz jam don't shake like that." I don't need to see your cute behind in those stretchy, wafer thin pants, and your adorable La Senza undies- and I also don't need to know that you have money enough to buy those particular work out clothes- I'm thoroughly not impressed. I would be more impressed, if you used that money to purchase something more awesome (which would be practically anything) or used it to pay off your credit card debt, which I'm sure you occurred when you purchased those silly pants.
Would you like to know how expensive this stuff is?
That shirt: $58
Those pants: $108
The shorts: $86

So now, the pro's of this silly corporation. The clothes are cute. I'll give it that. Plus, everyone wears it. Regardless of the fact that you get them all sweaty and gross from working out, people still wear them, constantly. I admit, that I'm a bit of a fashion follower, I like to dress somewhat up to date and I enjoy reading fashion magazines. However, LuLuLemon is purely a Canadian thing. People in other parts of the world, dress in nasty gym shorts and old t-shirts when they go for a jog. So I feel silly showing up for aerobics (not that I do it all that often because it's soooooooooo early in the morning- haha, 9:30am) in my gym shorts and a t-shirt. Is it wrong to want to fit in with the rest of the group? Or is it better to not succumb to the worldly fashion? It's a fairly obvious answer, but it does give some good food for thought. After all, the clothes are cute, and you never know who'll you'll run into when you're out for a jog (pun intended).

Anyways, that's all I had to stay about that. Let me know what you think, would you buy those clothes, or wouldn't you?

Umm, no thanks

Today's rant it brought to you by Facebook- the thing that is both a blessing and a curse. Please read and give me your feedback.

Back in high school, I had this friend, we will call him Frank. Frank wasn't really well liked. He had a 'bad boy' attitude and he liked to tell people about all the bad things he was doing. He liked to back talk to his teachers and get suspended. He also was a member of the church, and regularly attended seminary- he happened to be in my class. He was always very nice to me, and so a friendship developed.
I sort of felt bad for him, because I knew he didn't have many friends and that he had a lot of struggles- all I tried to do was be nice and friendly and try to help support him and help him stay active in the church. I didn't go out of my way, because I only saw him once a day during seminary. Every now and then he would make a comment or try to make some sort of gesture that suggested that he had a crush on me. I ignored it, and let it be known that I wasn't interested. One day our sophomore year, he disappeared. I just figured he had moved or something. I saw him a couple of times after that, but for the most part he had fallen off the Earth.
A few months ago, Frank joined Facebook, and landed a spot on my 'suggested friends' list. I added him as a friend, and we chatted a few times. Frank is still the same person I knew him to be. A bad boy who tries to be good, but can't seem to stay on the right path. He even landed in jail for a little while during high school, which explained the random disappearance.
Earlier today, Frank was online and sent me an invitation to chat with him. Sometimes I have a hard time talking to him because he is always complaining about everything. He's always has a problem and likes to talk about them, he asks for advice, but always seems to have a reason why it wont work or how it's not helpful. It bugs me a lot. It takes a lot of time and energy to talk to Frank. Long story short, Frank decides to declare his undying love for me. Dispite the fact that I haven't seen him in over 6 years, and I am MARRIED. If I wasn't interested in high school, there is no way I would be interested now. I was really upset because I was just trying to be nice and friendly. Everyone deserves a friend, right? It makes me even more upset because I don't know how I sent the wrong messages. I'm not very personable to him, because unfortunately this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Frank is very predictable, you see. A couple words here and there, and I can tell where it's headed. To say that I am 'cold', is an understatement. Most of my answers are yes and no, and I never share more than a few words or sentences. How got he the impression that I would accept any sort of gesture, or even return his 'affectionate' words, is beyond me.

So my question is... do you stop being nice to people in fear that your kindness is misinterpreted? And how do you rectify the situation? Better yet... I hear a lot of my YW tell stories about this all time. They are just nice to someone (usually a boy) and somehow the boy gets the wrong impression- what do you tell them to do? How to you even deal with it? Has this ever happened to you? What did you do in that situation? Please let me know, because I'm dying to come up with a solution to this epidemic.

Maybe it's just me

Well, here are our crappy/awesome costumes. I say crappy/awesome because my costume was crappy, and Warren's was awesome (coincidentally, I made his costume!) (Except for the body, he did that himself, but I made the helmet.)
I was supposed to be Lady GaGa. I borrowed those pants from Brynae, one of my amazing Mia Maids. My wig doesn't even resemble Lady GaGa- but this is what you get when you decide after you buy the wig, what you want to do with it. I made those sunglasses, and I am quite proud. Here is a close up- compare to the real ones she wore.
Ha, I'm not good at being a model. My face is ugly.

Hold on, back up a minute. Friday night we babysat our good friend's adorable kids. Usually people who know us don't want us to babysit- yet complete strangers ask all the time. Not that we are bad babysitters (I hope)- just a funny fact. I took some pictures of the kids we babysat.
Marybell is pretending to sit in a high chair, which is just a regular chair with the cushion on her lap.. she's eating fake eggs (but we pretended she had green cheese, lettuce, juice, marshmallows, a banana, and peas).
And Clayton- was just himself. He crawled around and giggled. He was interested in Warren's DS a lot.
We had a lot of fun babysitting- Warren mostly just sat and watched the movie and played his DS while I chased the baby around and tried to get him to walk... he came close a couple times, but still not quite there yet. He cried a lot when we put him to bed... it broke my heart! And Marybell crashed on the bean bag chair. After the movie we told her it was time for bed, but as we were talking to her, she conked out. We kept trying to nudge her and tell to get up... she was out, in 20 seconds! I hope they ask us to watch them again!

Back to Halloween- we didn't do much for the holiday. We went to the trunk or treat at the church- our trunk was 100% not decorated. And we're okay with it. Everyone liked Warren's costume, and only a handful of people knew what I was supposed to be. I'm pathetic. I don't even remember what we did last year- if that's not sad. One thing I noticed, was there were a lot of infants... and when I say 'infants' I mean under a year, dressed up and asking for candy. Now, I get that it's fun and cute and everyone oodles over seeing a baby dressed up like a carrot... I'll admit that it's cute... but it seems a little unnecessary. Maybe it's just me, and because I don't have kids, but I don't know if I'll dress my kids up when they are that young. They don't understand, and probably are not very comfortable in their costumes- not to mention, when most of the festivities are going on, they are tired and ready for bed. Like I said, maybe it's just me. But I was a little annoyed giving candy to a baby who can't even eat it yet... while their parents held open the bag and the baby is screaming and wiggling around. It can't be fun or anyone.
Anywho, that was our Halloween, and it wouldn't be complete without Kelsey piping in her opinion... haha!

The "sit-e-ation" and some giveaways

Well, I know lots of you are wondering what happened with the lady in my ward with the zoo of children she tried to pawn off to me. Well, she called me early in the morning (not today, obviously since it's Thursday) and she again tried to see if this weekend would work better. I was already frazzled when she called (I was running around my house and doing endless amount of laundry [that is a another blog post in and of itself]) and let it be known that I wasn't in the best of moods. I told her that we had somethings we needed to do this weekend as well, since we are both very busy Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Thursdays and Fridays are the only days we have to go to the grocery store and get other things done. She interrupted me and began talking up her kids. Saying things such as, 'oh, well the 15 year old can babysit while you are out'... and 'you can just put in a DVD and they will be glued to the TV'. I got a little frustrated because I could tell that she wasn't going to let it go. I explained that I hadn't consulted Warren before telling her I could do it, and he was upset with me- which was true, and telling her that we have absolutely not idea what to do with kids, especially ones in diapers- also true, AND that I was feeling really overwhelmed and a little pressured- mega true. She said she understood, but then concluded with how bias she was because she wanted to go away with her husband for a day or two. I understand why, but I think if you make the choice to pop out 8 kids you should be able to conclude that whisking each other off on a romantic getaway is impossible while your kids are still young. Anyways, we bickered back and forth for a little bit until she finally got frustrated with me and cocked a 'tone' with me. I offered my services to her if she needed someone to sit for her for a few hours sometime, but a whole weekend is too much. She finally just said, 'fine'... and we said our goodbyes. YIKES! Anyways, that's how that went down.

I found some AMAZING giveaways today... so I thought I'd share them on this blog since I have a bigger audience. I'm trying to change that, but what can ya do. ;)
