BEST 4th of July EVER!

For starters, this was mine and Warren's first 4th of July together. You think that's crazy because we've almost been married a year, but it's true! So this was a big deal for me! At my home, the 4th is the best holiday ever, and it has turned into my favorite holiday. Christmas is in a tie with the 4th in my book.

I had heard that the fireworks show in Salt Lake was a pretty big one, and it was the best in the whole state. Since I had never seen it, and I was pretty sure my lil' Canadian hadn't either, I figured that's what we could do to celebrate! We both had the day off, so we left early. Back at home, that's what my family did. We were the type of people who left early in the morning to claim our spots on the grass right up against the rope that went around the fireworks truck in the middle of the park. I loved it! Right up close to the launch pad- you had to lie down to watch them. Sometimes the ashes would land on you. This is the experience I wanted for this 4th of July. So that's what we did! We set up our blanket in Sugar House Park, then walked around for hours until the crowds started coming. Then we sat and waited for another couple of hours. Poor Warren got a little antsy.

The fireworks started, and it was pretty much the coolest thing I had ever seen! It was the biggest show I'd ever attended, too! We saw a lot of really intersting designs and shapes, and a lot of them I had never seen before. It was pretty awesome!

The next day, was Sunday. Kind of my least favorite day mixed with my most favorite day of the week. I hate waking up for early church. I'm always tired, and usually rushed for time and my hair never looks how I want it to. I'm sure this can all be resolved by going to bed earlier, but I'm not quite ready. Plus, it was the 4th of July! Who goes to bed early?!

To my no-surprise, I didn't sleep that night. I felt really sick from the heat and a little bit of car sick from Warren driving all over downtown Salt Lake trying to find the I-15. I managed to get just a couple of hours of sleep, I knew this was going to be a rough day. I woke up at my regular time, showered and got ready. When I got to Relief Society (which unforuntately happens to be my least favorite, probably because it comes first) I was really awake and alert. The lesson was one I probably wont forget either.

The lesson started out being about missionary work, but by the ended it had shifted to being about visiting teaching. To be honest, visiting teaching is something I dread doing each month. I sometimes get this horrible attitude and think it's for old women who don't work anymore, or for those who have children and don't get to see much of the outside world. But after that lesson, I can't seem to remember those bad feelings I had towards it. Someone shared a story that made everyone cry. Not because it was sad, or moving, but because everyone in the room knew how she felt, and it stirred up those hidden memories. It reminded me of my first weeks in the married ward. So many people came to visit me at my home. They made big efforts to let us know that we were welcomed. Those people have since moved on and moved out, but their influence will stick with me forever.

Sunday school, it got even better. We have been attending the marriage and family relations class. Mostly because our friends, the McKenna's, teach it most of the time. We really like them! The topic was forgiveness. Oh boy! After the stories from the lesson got started I realized that this couldn't have come at a better time. They say the first years of marriage are the worst, and boy can I testify of that! It was something we both needed to hear, and needed to understand.

By Sacrament, I was feeling pretty pumped because I had stayed awake and I was really getting a lot out of the lessons. A much needed Spiritual High. The testimonies that were shared only made it better. There were breaks in the meeting, and the entire building was silent. Even the babies were quiet. I really can't explain the feeling that I felt. But it really felt like everything was meant for me that day.

After Sacrament, we had our activities committee meeting. We just love everyone there. It was kind of bittersweet when we first got put in there, but now that most of the other couples have moved out, and been replaced, we love spending time with these poeple. They are the couples we would normally not make much of an effort to get to know. Yet we all get along great, and come up with the best ideas and work so well together. I know that the Lord put us there for a reason.

This was probably the best 4th of July of all time. To celebrate the independence of my country, and then to celebrate Christ. I know that we are going to be okay. If not, I don't think we would have made it this far. :)
